Watching Airplanes

Watching Airplanes (Gary Allan)

Izzie Centric

Sittin' out here on the hood of this truck lookin' up
At a caramel covered sunset sky
Checking my watch, doin' the math in my head
Countin' backwards to when you said goodbye
With those runway lights are gettin' brighter

I'm just sittin' out here watchin' airplanes
Take off and fly
Tryin' to figure out which one you might be on
And why you don't love me anymore
Right now, I'm sittin' out here watchin' airplanes

I would've lied, could've cried
Should've tried harder
Done anything to make you stay
I wonder what you'd do if you looked out your window
And saw me runnin' down the runway just like I was crazy
But that fence is too high
So am I

So, I'm just sittin' out here watchin' airplanes
Take off and fly
Tryin' to figure out which one you might be on
And why you don't love me anymore

By now, I know you're thirty-thousand feet above me
But a million miles away, a million miles away
By now, I know how to act like you don't love me

But I'm just sittin' out here watchin' airplanes
Take off and fly
And I'm just sittin' out here watchin' airplanes
Take off and fly
Tryin' to figure out which one you might be on
And why you don't love me anymore

Yeah, I'm just sittin' out here watchin' airplanes go by, by, by
I'm just sittin' out here watchin' airplanes, baby bye, bye

There’s a point in life when we realize that we’ve made a mistake. For some people it’s actually a lot of mistakes. Forgotten birthdays, misplaced documents, even missing the chance of a lifetime.

For Isobel Stevens they come three-fold. First there was the thing she had for Alex Karev. While it lasted that was fun. They’d meet in the on-call room, or the linen closet. Then she’d met Denny. He tore everything she had with Alex to shambles. Denny had proposed to her. She remembered it was prom night. She remembered that night when he died. Finally, most recently, George. Her best friend. The man she helped end his puppy love for Meredith. He married Callie Torres. Then she realized she loved him.

Yup, she didn’t really have a good track record with the men in her life. So she now sat on the hood of her car, watching planes take off and land. She wondered what it would be like to just get on one of them and never come back.

“Izzie?” Came a voice from behind her. She spun quickly to face him.

“Alex. How’d you find me?” She squeaked. He gave her a slight smile before climbing onto the hood next to her.

“I had a feeling.” He chuckled when she have him a skeptical look. “I saw the note you left Meredith.”

            “I was thinking.” She whispered.

            “That sounds dangerous. What about?”

            “Denny. George.” She sighed. “You.”

“You look upset. You want to talk?”

“Not about any of that. It’s too complicated for Friday night on the hood of a car.” She smiled.

“All right. We’ll talk about something else then.” He thought for a moment. “Did you know, when I was six years old, I had a rabbit. His name was Teddy. I took that bunny everywhere I could. He was my best friend. One day I came home and Teddy was gone. I ran around like I was crazy until my mom stopped me and told me that he was eaten by a fox.”

“Okay. Why are you telling me this?” She laughed, giving him a what-the-hell-are-you-talking-about look.

“Because I lost my best friend that day and I said I would never lose another one. But the day that I stopped hanging out with you ‘cause of that guy, I did. I tried telling myself that we could just be friends but I guess I was wrong.” He sighed.

“Why’s that?” Izzie cocked her head sideways.

“Cause I love you Isobel Stevens. I’ve been in love with you since the first time I saw you.” He said, eyes on the ground. A wind blew across the field and Izzie shivered. Alex quickly removed his jacket and laid it across them.

“Do you really?” She grinned, nestling her head against him.

“Yeah. You couldn’t see that?”  He chuckled nervously. That was such an Alex trait, nervousness.

“I guess not. What about Ava? I thought you were in love with her?”

“Nah. She’s on her way back home with her husband. Besides, she was only my temporary Izzie.” He winked.

“Aw, you’re such a sweetheart.” She mocked.

“I try.” Alex chuckled. An airplane flew loudly overhead. Izzie was finally content with just watching it. She wasn’t going anywhere….
